What is Reiki Healing Energy?
Reiki is a simple and beautiful way to channel the Universal energy to another human being through the hands to help heal. (definition)
Where did Reiki come from?
Reiki has been around for a VERY long time. In the beginning this art was practiced by ancient spiritual monks; however became a lost art to them and to the common people. Dr. Mikao Usui was born in 1865. During a fasting and mediation on Mount Kurama he had a vision. The system of Reiki came to him and he came down from the mountain with this new knowledge. He was instructed to hold healing and teaching sessions of this healing process.
What was he to do?
When he first began, he would sit across the room and send Reiki to a student or patient through his palms or some cases only by his thoughts. The technique is called “reiju”. He would instruct his students to say the following on a daily basis in order to relax and calm themselves.
- Just for today, I will not worry.
- Just for today, I will not be angry.
- Just for today, I will focus my awareness on what I am doing.
- Just for today, I will practice kindness.
- Just for today, I will be grateful.
What did he teach his students?
Dr. Usui would ask his students to run their hands above the patient slowly scanning their energy for differences in the feel of the energy. These feelings would come in a hot, cold or tingling feeling. Those areas were where he instructed them to focus their healing.
What did he teach his students?
Dr. Usui would instruct his students to begin by breathing and focusing their intentions on the healing of the patient. During private instruction he gave them the symbols for the healing practice and the chants/prayers for them to focus on prior to each healing. He would then ask them to run their hands above the patient slowly scanning their energy for differences in the feel of the energy. Most times, these feelings would come in a hot, a cold or a tingling in their hands. Those areas was where he instructed them to focus the healing energy of the Universe on by hovering above and concentrating that energy where it was needed. It was later found that even with the focus of the energies in specific areas, the energy would still also travel to where it was most needed. Dr. Usui died in 1946.
How did Reiki come to the USA
One of Dr. Usui’s students was Chujiro Hayashi, a Navy man in Japan who brought some structure to the teachings. He would grade the students in three Reiki levels: Level 1 – Student Level 2 – Teacher, and Level 3 – Master. It was believed that this was the time when the symbols were added to the practice of Reiki healing. He was also the administrator of a medical clinic and invited some of his patients to become healers and be a part of the healing team.
A woman living in Hawaii was suffering from a very significant illness and thus she visited the Hayashi’s clinic. She became one of his healers. Her name was Hawayo Takata. She would later become a Reiki Master herself. She saw the potential for this type of healing and upon her return to Hawaii, she began to heal and teach others. She was the originator of “Western” Reiki we know of today. In the beginning, she would only teach 22 students and they would become Masters. She would charge them a lot of money in order to motivate them to complete the teachings. At the time of her death, there was great disagreement by her Masters as to whom was the actual “Grand Master of Western Reiki”. They did not want the general public to obtain the symbols that were used in the ceremonies of healing and teaching. From that point on, the Reiki symbols were only revealed to the initiated students of Reiki.
The Masters would draw the secret symbols with their fingers in the air above the patient or write them in their minds eye prior to and while stating their intention before the Reiki session begins.
Cho Ku Rei – means ‘put the power here’ and is used to awaken the body area where the healing areas are, to heal physical things.
Sei Hei Ki – means ‘soothe feelings’ and is used to soothe sadness, anger and confusion, to heal emotional traumas that won’t go away.
Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen – means ‘no distance between us’ and is used in healing across long distances or across time. This is used for long distance healing sessions as well as in person healing.
Dai Komyo – means ‘big brightness’ or ‘teacher serves the student’ and is used to give initiation (known as the attunement) and to add energy power and authority over lower energy forces. (secret symbol)
The general population did not understand the reasons for the secrecy of the Reiki symbols. The disagreement between Reiki Master of who “the Master of Masters” was concluded. It was determined that all Reiki masters were to be considered as equals from that point on. Soon thereafter, the symbols were published in books and papers so that all could utilize the healing of Reiki. New forms of Reiki have been invented and many of the systems have continued to include similar energies of the original practice. The Usui techniques were the Master Reiki format and were recommended to all to learn first before they were to create a new process. Reiki has exploded and is recognized as an additional healing avenue for many people of today.
Please note, that Reiki is not an alternative or replacement to your regular doctor and health appointments. You should always consult your doctor before starting any alternative healing process. However, Reiki is considered to be a great addition to your regular health strategies.
I am a Reiki Master/Teacher. I have been certified and have experienced the energy that is Reiki to others for healing. It is an extremely beautiful experience when one can help to heal another by channeling the Universal energies in order to help them. I recommend it to anyone for whom this resonates. Open your heart and try something new, you will be glad you did.
